Meet Jacob Smith
aka "Jacob the Fighter"
Jacob is a surviver of Retinopathy of Prematurity and we are happy to have Jacob as our "first" feature story. He is just one of the many children affected by (ROP) and the reason our foundation is being formed.
In the NICU Jacob developed ROP, Retinopathy of Prematurity, an eye condition that occurs when the blood vessels of the eye grow improperly and causes the retina to detach from the inside of the eye. There are several surgeries available to help minimize and/or reverse the effects of the disease. In his first year, Jacob had 6 surgeries to help his retinas against detachment. For a time it seemed the surgery was successful on his right eye, but later proved ineffective. His right retina did reattach, but with scaring did not help contain his vision. Today Jacob is completely blind.
Jacob was born on September 4, 2003 at 5:17pm via emergency c-section. He weighed 1 lb 3 .oz and was 11 3/4" long. He spent his first 57 days on a ventilator. His eyes remained fused until he was a month old. He had his first of many surgeries when he was 9 days old. He received over a dozen blood transfusions. Mom & Dad couldn't hold him until he was 5 weeks old- He battled seizures, infections and other problems. After 126 days, he was finally healthy enough to come home.

You can personally veiw Jacob's  complete story on his home page at: www.jacobthefighter.com
